Declare I
September 2011, Performance and Installation.
Terracotta clay, wooden chair, photographs, paint, stones, jars, water, salt, mustard seeds, sand, shells and water from the Gulf of Mexico

This is an emotional self-portrait. I hung an antique lace tablecloth on the gallery wall and threw lobs of terracotta clay (dirt), building up a negative image of the lace. A mandala. Something beautiful to reflect the beauty and energy in difficult emotions. There is an antique chair placed below the lace mandala. I separated the laminated layers, painted each one teal and sandwiched intimate portrait photos of myself between. It represents my vocal folds, my voice, and expression Opening up. Below the stool are black basalt stones and three jars. Black Stones for grounding and renewal. Salt for purification, mustard seeds for faith, and a bit of sand and ocean from the Gulf of Mexico (place of my birth) for grounding/roots.
